I'd like to welcome everybody to today's presentation on motivation. In the next hour, we're going to define motivation, identify the five principles of motivation enhancements, review the concepts of motivation, and identify the types of motivation and ways to enhance them. Generally, when we think about motivation, we often consider the general concept of whether we want to do something or not. However, in this presentation, you'll learn that there are actual facets to motivation that can be worked on to ensure that people are as motivated as possible. Now, let's think about why people change. You wake up in the morning, drink your coffee, eat your breakfast, go to work, do whatever, come home, go to sleep, and repeat. What would make you want to change? The answer to that, which we will discuss more, is generally because you either want something you're not getting (a feeling of deprivation) or you're getting something you don't want and want to get rid of (a discomfort). I had a mentor in graduate school who told me that change causes crisis and crisis causes change. This idea has stuck with me for many years. When you try to do something new, it will cause some upheaval, but it doesn't have to be debilitating. However, it will be uncomfortable. So, we need to find ways to keep people motivated even when things are uncomfortable and when the going gets tough. Crisis causes change. When people feel a crisis or discomfort, they are motivated to make it stop. This leads us to the question: What is motivation? Motivation is the desire to change, and there are various...
